1 I lift up my eyes to you, to you whose throne is in heaven. 2 As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid look to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, till he shows us his mercy. 3 Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us, for we have endured much contempt. 4 We have endured much ridicule from the proud, much contempt from the arrogant.
The writer of this Psalm starts out with “I” but moves to “we”. From verses 3 and 4, I believe the “we” is referring to “the church” because the church at that time certainly experienced much contempt and ridicule from proud and arrogant people and nations. Perhaps this was written during their times under Babylonian rule.
It got me thinking about how today the church continues to be persecuted by proud and arrogant people. How blessed I am to live in a country where I am free to worship God, to profess to be a Christian, and not end up beaten, imprisoned or murdered. Many other places around the world do not have that same privilege.
The message here is to lift our eyes up to God in times of trouble. Cry out for mercy and He will rescue us. I’m encouraged to pray for the church today, especially those in countries where Christians are dying every day because of their faith.
If you want to know more about Christians who are being persecuted in the world, I’d encourage you to visit Voice of the Martyrs website at www.persecution.com.
Lord, rescue us – have mercy on us. When we’re persecuted, we will not be daunted. You told us that in this world there would be trouble. You told us that if the world hated You, they would also hate us. Have mercy on those in over 40 countries around the world who are beaten and murdered because of their Christian faith. Have mercy on Christians in America, Lord, including myself, who take for granted the blessings we have, and who stand by and do nothing about the war we are in against Christianity. Raise up leaders, Lord, who are not afraid to speak out against those who are permitting or committing these attrocities against Your church, Lord. Help me to know what I am to be doing about it as well. May You be glorified in all the nations, Lord.
grace & peace,
